ZINNIA
Velda Newman
Nevada City, California
2010
Hand dyed cotton sateen, paint, inks; hand stitched and hand quilted
88 x 211 inches (7.33 x 17.58 feet)
ZINNIA, which took two years to complete and measures more than 17 1/2 feet wide and over 7 feet tall, is Velda Newman's magnum opus and by far the biggest quilt she has ever made. This vastly oversized, highly detailed, and elegant work is based on intense study of a wide variety of zinnias that Newman grew in her back yard. She explains " I photographed the zinnias when they started blooming and continued until they were done. Each flower was composed of many petals, each was cut out of fabric, assembled into the flower shape and stitched together. All the edges were basted to the back side." The lavender dots scattered across the surface of the quilt represent grains of floating pollen.
This is a special piece that will make an unforgettable statement in the right setting.
