FLORESCENT RAG
Michael James
Somerset, Massachusetts
1977
Cottons; hand appliquéd and reverse appliquéd, hand quilted
60 x 60 inches
Michael James illustrated and discussed this unusual quilt in his 1978 book The Quiltmaker's Handbook: : A Guide to Design and Construction, using it to teach the processes of appliqué and hand quilting step-by-step. James explains, "I was in developmental/experimental mode, and it was a way to work through hand appliqué and reverse appliqué, both of which it contains." A full page black and white detail photograph of Florescent Rag serves as the frontispiece for the book, and it also appears as color plate 10 and in numerous photos in chapters 4 and 5.
In both its design and techniques, this quilt is unique in Michael James's oeuvre.
