Midden is an old English word for a refuse heap of everyday domestic waste. For archaeologists, a midden represents a picture of a culture. Joan saves her broken dishes and says, “Each shard shows a fragment of a pattern and is precious to me because it represents a cup, teapot or dish that existed in a specific time.
