PATCHWORK QUILT
Joe Cunningham
San Francisco, California
2011
Machine sewn cotton and bias tape
74 x 74 inches
Note: This piece was photographed against a black background, which is not part of the work.
Joe Cunningham says he realized after he completed it that this quilt looked like modern art, so he therefore felt compelled to title it Patchwork Quilt so it would not be mistaken for anything else. Reverse shades of Thomas Downing, whose 1963 painting Quilt, was recently sold by Sotheby's. He adds, "Patchwork Quilt is made of fabric from both Ghana and Japan, along with commercial bias tape. Since the pieces of Japanese indigo are simply patched onto the background fabric, I decided to call this Patchwork Quilt."
